Trout and Tarpon
Report Date: June 23, 2006
June
The trout bite has been on fire this week. Capt. Rob and myself have had several trips this week with limits of big trout. Remember you can only keep 5 trout per person. They have to be a minimum of 15” and no more than 20” except for one trout any size over 20”.
The trout have been very active early in the morning regardless of what the tide is doing. Try top water plugs in shallow water 1’ to 3’. If the top water plug bite slows a little try switching up to the popping cork and jig combo. Move off to a little deeper water. You can also try working a jerk bait or shallow diving crank bait like a YoZuri crystal minnow.
Capt. Rob and I took my son Jonah fishing Wednesday morning. We started off top water fishing a huge school of trout, blue fish, Spanish, Jacks and lady fish working a school of bait about 75 yards long. We pulled a nice limit of large trout within an hour. Even Capt. Rob was able to catch a keeper.
After catching our fill of trout we decided to head out of the pass and investigate the reports of tarpon catches. We needed some larger pinfish than we currently had in the live well so hooked up with a friend of mine who was anchored down the beach just a little ways. He was kind enough to give us a dozen large pinfish. We set out the anchor and waited for their arrival. It wasn’t long before we started to see tarpon cruising down the beach. Our first couple attempts didn’t result in a hook-up. However it wasn’t long before we spotted a school of tarpon feeding on a school of bait. Capt. Rob threw his pinfish in just the right spot and was rewarded with a hook-up. It didn’t last very long. The tarpon broke off. He was able to hook and jump another tarpon just a few minutes later. We ended up with two hook ups and one jump.
All in all with the trout in the morning and the tarpon later on it was a great day. Remember to be respectful of other anglers on the water. Watch your drift and don’t motor up to close to other boats that are anchored up trying to catch tarpon.
See you on the water,
Capt.Todd
