April 30
I took a couple of customers out this morning and decided to fish the east bank of North Bay. This was due largely to the heavy winds coming out of the east. The east bank was sheltered from the wind. The water was clear and right away we started seeing schools of Redfish. Some schools had upwards of sixty fish in them. This presented the perfect opportunity to sight fish. We started out using top water plugs but quickly switched over to Berkley Gulp Shrimp. The Reds just didn’t seem to interested in the top water but the Gulp Shrimp really did the trick. We must have boated nearly 20 redfish by 8:00am. These were all really nice reds with a couple being oversized. We fished the Gulps on a plain un-weighted hook and let it do the slow sink. Once the Redfish picked up the scent or caught a visual the fight was on .This was a 4hr trip so on my way in I called Mark Gentry and Virginia Danner from Howell tackle and told them to meet me at the boat ramp with the video camera . We quickly unloaded one set of gear and loaded another and off we went. Within minutes I was hooked up on a 25 inch Redfish that we were able to get on video for an upcoming episode of the Howell Fishing Show.We were able to see about a 50 or 60 more Redfish but the tide stopped moving and the fish stopped feeding, that’s fishing.
Capt. Rob Womble headed over to West bay at the same day and slipped up into a creek just past Harrison. This allowed him to stay out of the wind. He was able to catch 5 good-sized Redfish and three keeper trout. All on top water and Capt Mike’s gold spoon.
Folk’s the fish are on the flats. Although it has been windy lately try your best to find an area sheltered from the wind and you will find fish. The trout have been close to the points in about 3 to 4 foot of water. The Redfish are tight to the grass during the high water and can be found close to the mouth of the creeks during the falling tide.

Had another charter this morning. I took them to the same area I fished yesterday with pretty much the same results. Had a limit of Redfish by 830 am. The bite has been pretty consistent. We changed it up a little bit here and there and tried some top water and gold spoons along with the Berkley Gulp Shrimp. All produced fish. As the day went on my customers wanted to catch some trout so we motored over close to Harrison bayou and started throwing Gulp Shrimp under a Cajun Thunder Float. Folks this isn’t a fishing tail. By early afternoon we must have caught nearly a hundred school size trout and several over 20 inches. There were several times all three of us were hooked up at the same time. Our biggist trout was taken on a Capt.Mikes gold spoon, this is number 5 over 6 lbs. On a Capt. Mikes gold spoon this season.
Capt. Rob Womble took a couple clients into East bay and fished the evening falling tide at the mouth of the creek leading into Smack Bayou. They caught 7 reds and two trout. All on top water plugs and spoons. Capt. Rob says that this time of the year on a falling tide anywhere in East Bay that you can find a bayou or a creek that feeds the bay on a falling tide it will produce.
The bait is starting to show up in Saint Andrew’s bay, Grand Lagoon, close to the Hathaway Bridge, East bay and some parts of West bay. If you can net some bait and find an area that the water is moving try to chum the water with a hand full of stunned or dead bait. After you have chummed the area (not too much) free line a bait into the chum slick and hold on. You don’t have to be right up against the bank. There are areas in the middle of Saint Andrew’s Bay that are only 2 to 3 ft deep. Those areas hold good quantities of trout and redfish and they will gladly take live bait or a grub popped under a Cajun thunder Cork. Don’t be surprised if you hook into a Spanish or a Blue fish while you are out on the Middle grounds.
