Epic Redfish And Trout Day
Report Date: April 1, 2006
Today I went fishing with my good friend Capt. Rob Womble at Crooked Island Sound on what was suppose to be our first Pompano fishing trip of the year. The plan was to leave the boat ramp around 6:00am and fish for trout and redfish for the first hour or so until the sun came up a bit. After the sun came up we would head out the pass and start fishing for Pompano. Well you know what they say about the best-laid plans.
From the time we arrived at our redfish and trout spot the top water action was amazing. Capt. Rob was the first to hook up with a nice size red and he soon followed up with a nice trout over 20 inchs. It wasn’t long before I had landed a couple nice reds myself. By 9:00pm we had landed 10 reds and a nice trout. The wind started to pick up a little and the reds and trout were starting to short strike (miss) the top water plugs. We were able to keep the bite going by pitching a soft plastic Berkly Power Bait behind the top water plug whenever a trout or red would take a pass at the plug. This technique works well and I recommend whenever your fishing the flats with a top water plug you should have a back-up at the ready.
Well we ran to the pass to take a shot the Pompano but by the time we got there the wind and surf had gotten a little to rough for our taste. To tell you the truth we had both decided that after the morning we just had, trying to fight the wind and surf just didn’t look to appealing. Maybe next time.
