Topwater Redfish

Report Date: April 23, 2007

The inshore fishing has been on fire. Right now the trout and redfish
are targeting the baitfish on the moving tide. The water is still
warming a bit and the bait is moving in in larger numbers. North Bay,
East Bay, West Bay and the middle grounds are all pretty good right now.
Topwater plugs have been the key. Try a gold spoon as the sun comes up a
bit and the water gets up in the grass.
Sunday Capt. Todd Jones and I doubled up on a charter and we took our
clients to Crooked Island. We got there just a little after sun-up and
the redfish were all over our plugs from the first cast. Timing your
arrival with the incoming out outgoing tide will be the key to a
successful day. The reds were in about 1 foot of water. You don't have
to run very far from the boat ramp. Just drop the throttle for about 5
min and pull over to one side or the other and start fan casting. They
will let you know soon enough if they are there or not. Don't waste too
much time in one spot if they aren't biting. We seemed to have the best
luck on plugs with a little chartreuse on them. Remember long cast will
help you keep your distance from the fish so they don't spook as easy.
Oh one last thing. While we were there we witnessed a couple guys in a
boat that had no business being in shallow water eat up a 200 yard long
patch of grass. Why is this important???? The sea grass is the habitat
for the bait and the fish that feed on the bait. The same fish you are
trying to catch. The grass does not grow back like the stuff in your
yard. Sea grass takes an extremely long time to grow. If you want to
fish the shallows and your boat does not have a shallow draft or a
trolling motor....get out and wade fish. You will more

Harry with nice topwater red

than likely catch more fish anyway. As always tread
lightly on the flats and good luck on the water.
