Flyfishing/Redfish and Trout
Report Date: April 3, 2007
The Redfish and Trout bite is on in full swing. I have had several charters this week and every trip ended up with multiple Trout and Redfish in the boat. There is alot of bait moving into the bay and the feed bag is on. Top water plugs like Skitterwalks
and shallow diving hard baits like a Yozuri crystal minnow are working well. Soft plastic baits such as the Berkley Gulp are also working well. Just remember the pinfish are in and they like the Gulp bait as much as the Trout and Redfish. I recommend holding off on throwing the gulp until you see a good target, like a tailing Redfish or a Trout hitting the surface. If you try to blind cast with the Gulp bait keep it moving so the pinfish don't tear it up too bad. The tides are finally moving up up enough for the Redfish and Trout to move into the grass and stay there…..even at lower tides. A Capt. Mike's spoon will work pretty good in that deep grass for the Redfish. It will also work pretty well on the Trout too. Last year around this time Capt. Rob Womble caught an 8 plus pound trout on the spoon. Speaking of Capt. Rob he says the fly fishing is great. Last week he had several fly fishing charters with the average catch being 5 to 6 Redfish and a couple of very nice Trout, all on fly. This time of year he likes to start in the late afternoon and stake out a section of the flats and wait. He will wait for awhile looking for the Redfish to tail, leave a wake or crash on passing bait. Once he spots them its only a matter of a few cast and the fly is in place. The rest as he says is up to the fish. If you are looking for a great fly fishing trip with one of the areas top fly fishing guides give us a call. For those of you who will be visiting our waters in sunny Panama City this Spring Break and Summer, if you are not familiar with our waters and would like to go fishing we recommend you hire a local guide like ourselves. For the small amount of money you will spend on a great fishing trip you will more than make up for with not having to deal with the frustration of trying to find the fish on limited time. We also recommend that you not jump at your first web page add. Call one of the local tackle stores in Panama City and ask about the guide you are thinking about hiring. There may be one or two not so professional guides out there that may make your day a drag.
