BIG Trout and Redfish on the flats
Report Date: March 12, 2007
This has been a great week for both Redfish and large Trout. The Redfish
are starting to move back into their normal shallow water routines and
the larger Trout are back on the flats. Top water plugs such as the Zara
Spook or Mirror Lure are working pretty good at locating the fish. If
you get a hit but the fish wont commit...have a second rod ready with a
soft bait such as a Gulp Jerkshad or Shrimp. Leave the
top water plug in the area that the fish missed and throw the bait right
in behind it. This technique has been working very well over the last
couple weeks. Friday Capt. Rob Womble had a good day boating several
Redfish over 25 inches and one trout close to 7 lbs using this
technique. Sunday I went out in the morning and had an awesome day
boating 5 large Redfish one trout 27" and several other very nice
keeper sized. The water was clear and the wind was calm. In those type
of conditions we like to slow down and start looking way ahead of the
boat. More often than not you will either see the fish in the water or
his fin breaking the surface as he feeds. Remember stealth equals more
opportunity. Be quiet, cut your engine way ahead of the area you intend
to fish and try to use the wind and current to your advantage so your
trolling motor does not scare the fish. In the clear water try to down
size the size of the lure. This will limit the splash the lure makes as
it hits the water. Also remember you may need to lengthen your
fluorocarbon leader if you are using braided line so you don't spook the
fish.
Good luck on the water.
