Week of 10-16 June

Report Date: June 17, 2006

This week was a little windy due to the tropical storm that hit the Gulf Coast. Although it didn’t hit here, we still received a little wind and some rain. This made the sight fishing difficult at best, so we pushed off into 2-4 foot of water and used the Cajun Thunder with a jig. Just about any jig will work as long as it has a Gulp Shrimp on it! We prefer the Natural and Nuclear Chicken Berkley Gulp shrimp. Rig it about 18” to 24” below the cork and pop it every few seconds on the retrieve.
This tactic worked well this week. Capt. Rob and myself had several trips this past week and we had limits of some nice sized Speckled Trout and a couple Redfish as well as Blue fish and a few Jack Crevel. Just remember that the Gulp shrimp will catch everything that eats shrimp. This includes catfish. Use caution when unhooking those critters because they can FIN you.
This is a great time of year to be out on the water. There are a lot of different species of fish near shore and inshore. We hooked and landed a small cobia with the Gulp this week in West Bay, and we have seen several sharks feeding up on the flats. Some good reports of Tarpon in the area and the Pompano are still here.
Capt. Kyle Pitts, of HighTide Guide Service, reports seeing lots of tarpon as well as large sharks out in the Gulf. Speaking of large sharks, we were able to get some great footage of a 150 lb. black-tip hitting my favorite topwater lure (Super Spook Jr.) in about 2 feet of water! You can see this awesome footage on an upcoming episode of The Howell Fishing Show.
The wind calmed down towards the end of the week and we were able to catch some really nice Trout on topwater lures.
Howell Tackle’s very own Mark Gentry had a banner week with his new secret weapon topwater lure he was able to catch lots of nice size Speckled Trout and even landed several of the elusive Redfish he has been pursuing for the past several weeks. So come on in to Howell Tackle and maybe he will let you in on his new secret weapon!

Thanks and good luck on the water,
Capt. Todd
