Fishing report for 15-21 May

Report Date: May 23, 2006

Well last week was a really good week. We had several trips and all were very successful. The Redfish and Trout bite has been outstanding. The winds are starting to let up a little more and the sight fishing for Reds has been great. Yes that’s right I said sight fishing. There are a few people/guide in the area that either can’t or don’t understand how to sight fish the clear waters of Panama City, FL. Well come fish with us and we will make a believer out of you.
Me, Capt. Rob Womble and a Client went fly fishing the other day and the morning calm waters were just full of Redfish. We had a lot of hits and brought 5 redfish to the boat. It’s pretty easy when you can see them tailing less than 50ft in front of you. If you don’t fly fish try throwing a lighter weight spoon, D.O.A shrimp, Jerk bait or a Berkeley Gulp Shrimp. Just remember softer landings in the water will normally translate into more hook-ups.
Something else to remember. If you are fishing the shallows for Redfish stand-by for gator Trout action. The really big Trout (females) push up into the shallow waters for their spawning. The same 6 inches of water that holds the Redfish also hold the larger Trout. Now granted you will normally not get as many hits/hook-ups as you would if you were fishing the 2 to 5 foot area but the quality of the fish will be better.
Yesterday Capt. Rob and a Client landed several nice Trout with one weighing in at over 6 lbs. Not to mention a couple nice Reds. My trip ended up with a limit of very nice Trout and Redfish. Now is the time to be on the water.
One more thing. The key to more hook-ups is stealth. Try not to use the trolling motor if you can. Use a push poll if you have one. If not try to position yourself up wind of your target area and let the wind push you along.
What ever you do don’t start your main engine and try to use it to reposition yourself… well not if you plan on fishing the same area you started the motor. I bring this up because Me and Capt. Rob had the pleasure of watching a so called experienced guide in a 20ft boat in 6 to 8 inches of water use his main motor to reposition the boat. Not only does this scare the fish but it damages the sea grass.
The flats between Redfish point and Davis point and redfish point and Palmetto Point have been really good for Redfish. Try the docks and flats around the turtle hatchery for Trout. There are several deeper holes in that area that are located pretty close to the flats and the Trout will transit between them. Popping cork or live bait will work. Behind the airport has been really good for both Trout and Redfish. Good luck on the water.
