Topwater Trouts/Reds

UP ON THE FLATS
Although we have had to cancel a trip or two because of the winds, the overall trout and redfish bite has been pretty good. We have still been targeting the slot sized reds and the larger trout up on the flats. The water temp is warming up nicely and the water clarity is getting much better. Both the redfish and trout are hitting the top-water plugs with more and more confidence.
Capt. Todd and I have been waiting until 8:00 or 9:00 am to leave the dock in the morning. This does a couple things for us. One we can sleep in, two we can eat breakfast, three it gives the water a chance to warm in the sun a bit and the extra time also lets the tide work its way in a little more. Keep your eye on the points of land in the bay right now. The reds have been working around the points in good numbers. The trout are still up in some of the bayous and lagoons but the big ones are already making their way onto the flats. We have been using top-water plugs and spoons for the reds and top-water plugs with suspending plugs for the trout.
OUT IN THE BAY
Out in the bay the bigger (over the slot) redfish are being caught at the pass. Capt. Kyle Pitts reports good numbers of reds and Sheep Head. If you are looking for a low impact, professionally guided fishing trip you need to call Capt. Pitts. He specializes in live bait fishing and I doubt you will find a more courteous or professional captain on the bay.
